Mini Aussie vs Mini Aussiedoodle
You may be wondering - should we get a Mini Aussie or an Aussiedoodle? What are the differences between the two?
On the surface the Mini Aussie and the Aussiedoodle may seem comparable, however, once you break down the characteristics of each breed, there is a vast difference. Many families are drawn to the Aussiedoodle because of its reputation as a hypoallergenic breed. Contrary to popular belief, aussiedoodles are not always hypoallergenic and can still shed. The higher the percentage of poodle in the cross the closer to hypoallergenic they can be, however there is still the issue of dander, which is present on a dog regardless of coat type. The aussiedoodle coat requires much more maintenance and grooming than the Mini Aussie, in fact it is quite intensive in its grooming requirements. The doodle coat is known for excessive matting because it combines the poodle coat characteristics with the dual coat characteristics of the Mini Aussie. Talk to any groomer and they will tell you that the doodle coat is very hard to manage and keep matt free. The aussiedoodle must visit the groomer frequently for coat maintenance and trimming. This is something to consider with maintenance costs. On the flip side, Mini Aussies actually have an extremely low maintenance coat that only requires a simple brushing a couple times a week. Their coat is weather resistant and self cleaning. Most families are drawn to a certain breed because the characteristics of that breed fit their lifestyle and wants. When you start crossing two very different breeds, the outcomes can be unknown both in temperament and health. The popular saying about multi breed dogs is the benefit of "hybrid vigor". Unfortunately, the argument for hybrid vigor can also be reversed as potential health conditions in each breed may combine to create an even bigger issue. There is also the factor of consistency. Our Mini Aussies have generations of consistency behind them so you know what you will be getting. Aussiedoodles can be a mixed bag of outcomes and far from consistent. So in conclusion - may I suggest in my humble opinion - either settle on a Mini Aussie or settle on a poodle - don't bother with the mix mash of what can result by crossing the two. Most poodles look like aussiedoodles anyway and have similar coat patterns. |
